The artist explores the consideration of color and its relationship with the human body. This series includes a video performance and a performance done in the public space to address the human understanding of black and white. In both performances the active removal of paint from the artists’ own body, challenges the perception of self and how one can be perceived by others. The video begins with showing the quick reversal of paint being applied to the artist, to then continue with a spoken word poem to accompany her removal of the light as seen by her. In the public performance, the artist sits in the center of the Santissima Annunziata Piazza in Florence, Italy and actively removes paint from her face as a sort of unveiling or unmasking for the other to knowingly gaze and reflect. These works attempt to evoke an acknowledgement to humanity and one’s identity in the world.
